A Tale of Two Cities

Here is a record of my wanderings around London and Paris, just in case you wanted to know what I was up to on the other side of the Atlantic . . .

Gone to London to See . . .

THE QUEEN!
Yes, I really did see her on Saturday!

The first thing I did was to get some bread, peanut butter and Raspberry Jam-- restaurants here are so expensive! Maybe I just haven't found it yet, but there's not a place you can eat for less than £3-- about $6. So now I've got my goceries and can do a little better.

We went down to Churchill's Cabinet War Rooms in the morning-- this is a large complex underneath some of the government buildings down in the Whitehall neighborhood, all underground so as to survive the Blitz, the German bombing of London during WWII. He had meeting rooms for the defense committees and such, a map room, a communications room, a BBC broadcasting room, etc., as well as sleeping quarters for everyone who worked there. It was really amazing. At the end of the war, they just locked it up and left most of it just like it was-- even including the sugar ration that one officer left in his desk drawer.

When we came out, we split up again. I went with Sarah, one of my classmates, into St James' Park which is right near there, just because I wanted a slow walk so I could eat my apple. We walked around-- beautiful park-- all full of green grass and flowers (in July! imagine that!) and a pond with ducks. Then we decided that since we were in the neighborhood, we might as well go up and see Buckingham Palace. So we walked up there. Wow. I think maybe the US should get a king just so we can have places like that. The gates were covered in gold, the house was HUGE, and there were the little red soldiers in their big black hats, just like in the books. We took a bunch of pictures and all, and were about to leave when we noticed a crown gathering by the side gate. So we walked over to see what they were waiting for-- it turned out to be the Queen herself. And, after waiting a while, she drove out in the back of her black car, perfectly dressed, with a hat and gloves on, waving to the people who were watching! It was the highlight of my day. I couldn't believe it actually happened! (I did get it on video, thank you Emily, but it was so quick . . . )

Saturday night we went down across the millenium bridge to the Globe theatre (reconstructed, of course), where we saw a very interesting version of Pericles, Prince of Tyre. (It was all in modern dress, which surprised me, but with Shakespeare's words. Walking back was magical, though. It was wonderfully cool, and we weren't in a hurry, and the Thames at night is like nothing I've ever seen.

Another wonderful day!
