A Tale of Two Cities

Here is a record of my wanderings around London and Paris, just in case you wanted to know what I was up to on the other side of the Atlantic . . .

A Foggy Day in London Town

Actually, it was a light rain, but the effect was the same.

I got here yesterday-- our plane came in at six in the morning, then it took us nearly an hour to get our passports checked and get our baggage (one guy's suitcase was lost, but then it turned up). Then we got on a little bus and drove in the morning traffic to London. (I don't know how far away Gatwick Airport is from London, but it took us all of two hours.) I should say, too, that the teacher and half the students who were supposed to be traveling with us had their flight from Lubbock canceled, so 11 of us were doing this on our own.

Of course I didn't get much sleep on the plane. I was already tired from staying up all the night before, and i tried my hardest, but I was just too wound up to sleep.

We got our rooms-- everyone has their own. We're in one of the dorms for University College London. It takes up a block, with a courtyard-type thing in the middle. The girls are on the 5th floor, looking out over Maple Street. My window swings open, too, so I like to hang my head out and watch the street. It's an old building, but clean and well-kept. We get breakfast and dinner in the little cafeteria downstairs. The food is a little strange, but it's ok.

We went out walking yesterday morning, just to try and stay awake so that we could get over our jet lag (6 hours!) and soon found out about the bombs that had gone off earlier. Everyone was clustered around the electronics shops' windows and in pubs, watching the news. All the tube stations and some of the stores were closed-- the bus bomb, i think, was in Russell Square, just a few blocks from us. So we went back to our dorm, where the rest of our group joined us after lunch. Don't worry about me, more activity is unlikely, and I am well taken care of.

We took another tour of the neighborhood after our second lunch (Kambra (our professor) and the others were hungry when they got here-- I just had some wonderful chocolate ice cream and coffee) all in a misty rain-- it was wonderful! For all the things that have gone wrong so far, I am having the time of my life.

I only have 8 minutes left on my internet time, so I'll have to wait to tell you all the things I did today-- more walking in the heart of London . . .

I love you all!

I wasn't able to read it all, but I can't believe the places you have been. I can't wait to hear what you do when you get to Paris! Like the Eiffel Tower, and the Louvre, and perhaps Fontainebleu or other places!!!!!
